A Response Essay to the movie "Brave"

Have you ever seen the movie, 'Brave'? It is about a princess Merida, who is different from the Disney princesses we know. Even though Merilda's personality is unique, I did not like the movie that much.

Before I begin, I want to tell you the summary of 'Brave'.'Brave has 2 big topics: first, the relationship between Merida and her mother, and second, Merida changing her fate. Merida was a very active girl. She loved to ride horses, shoot arrows, and do naughty things. However, her mother wanted Merida to be a nice, calm, wise girl, because she will soon be the queen. Time flew and it was the day for Merida;s marrige. Merida didn't want to be married, and had a conflict with her mother. Merida and her mother both god mad. Merida;s mother threw Merida's bow, and Merida ripped the cloth between Merida and her mother. Because the bow was Merida;s favorite, Merida ran out of the house and met a witch. Merida asked the witch to change Merida's mother, and the witch gave Merida a spell. The spell made Merida;s mother a bear, and Merida then tries to chage her mother back into a bear.

The first reason why I didn't like 'Brave' was because it was too unrealistic. Of course, movies and animations are unrealistic, but 'Brave' may confuse naive children. The most unrealistic character was the wisps. A witch may be in an animation, and help the story's flow. However, if young children watch this movie, they might think that when they have a hard time doing something, wisps will appear and show them their path. then, the children will try to  rely on something, or someone else, when they should be solving  the problem.

The second reason is that there was a useless part. When Merida found the witch's house, and the witch chased Merida away, Merida gave the witch a necklace. The witch's face and her act was very suspicious, but the necklace wasn't mentioned again in the movie.  Also, after the witch tells Merida about how to end the spell, the witch disappeared entirely. It feels like some characters were made temporarily just to make the story continue.

The third reason is that the story is too obvious. Disney movies with princesses always ends with a happy ending. Even though the movie didn't say happily ever after, the movie ended with a happy ending, again! It would be more interesting if there was another type of ending, a twist.

The final reason is that it feels like the story did not end. After Merida's mother becomes a human again, and Merida and Merida's mother apologizes to each other, the movie ends with some words  about changing our fate. I really wanted to know what happened nest. What happened to the witch? What happened to Merida and her mother? What happened to Merida's country? It might be intentionally left open to our imagination, but I think it leaves the audience to feel awkward because there wasn't any conclusion.

In conclusion, I thought the movie 'Brave' was not a good movie. I had four reasons explaining why. The movie does give a moral, but not in a realistic way. The movie had an interesting plot, but had an obvious ending. The movie had a great flow, but used too many temporary characters and useless scenes. Finally, the movie had a touching ending, but make it feel like the story did not end. Try watching the movie 'Brave', and don't forget to tell me how you felt about it.

  1. I remember editing this essay; I liked it then and I still do. The clear argumentation and solid conclusion make this essay an obvious stand-out.
